Jan Potocki and Łańcut (trans. A. Opiela-Mrozik) ABSTRACT: Jan Potocki visited Łańcut at least three times but this article does not focus on his visits in the castle – it is dedicated to his relations with its owner, duchess Elżbieta Lubomirska nee Czartoryska (1736-1826). This relationship had begun when Jan Potocki married Julia, daughter of the duchess, and concluded in 1814, a few months before the death of the writer. The relationship, as revealed in the correspondence, was complicated, extreme, oscillated from the wildest hatred to gentle feelings. The duchess, however, took care of her children’s education leaving them the castle in Łańcut in her testament.

Potocki and the Imagination of the Underground (trans. S. Kaufman) ABSTRACT: The geography of The Manuscript Found in Saragossa has been reconstructed many times. Important, however, is also its vertical topology. The underground world plays four functions in the context of the work: pictorial, social, economic and symbolic. The vertical dimension, from topological, as well as historical point of view, creates winding stairs which constitute a passage between two worlds: secret and open society, the present and the past. This literary imagination is related to the discoveries of that time: geology, mineralogy, and the foundation of mining schools in the whole Europe. One can compare the role of hiding in the works of Potocki to the metaphor of mines used by German romantic writers.

Book as a Material and Cultural Object in The Manuscript Found in Saragossa (trans. A. Opiela-Mrozik) ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the motif of book and other literary documents in The Manuscript Found in Saragossa. It analyses the book as a material and cultural object in order to prove that the novel by Potocki is a catalog of literary presentations of functions, traditions and values of the end of the 18th century. Potocki’s novel directs the transmission of discourse and attests to the clear awareness of its author about the diversification of cultural values connected with the object, duality of the book perceived as a material object, as well as a medium or symbol of discourse. The author of this article emphasizes that the book-object plays the main role in the plot of the novel fulfilling primarily the relational and social functions.

The Manuscript Found in Saragossa as a Game (trans. S. Kaufman) ABSTRACT: The author of this article proposes to treat Jan Potocki’s novel as a game manual and examine the connections between a ludic game and freedom. Analyzing the rules of the game established by Schiller, Huizinga, Caillois, and Duflo the author shows that The Manuscript Found in Saragossa under the guise of the game called Gus, creates another game, a more complicated one. Its players agree to subordinate themselves to a ludic contract, exchange their natural freedom for a new one, close to its definition provided by Spinoza, created within the rules of the game. This freedom, created in the space of Sierra Morena, is closer to the category of “conatus”: the desire, appetite, power of existence. The game proposed to the protagonist offers him the possibility to augment the causal power by joining the world dynamic or, in other words, the cause-effect game which generate one another in Potocki’s novel.

Jan Potocki’s Parades at the Castle in Łańcut (trans. J. Frużyńska) ABSTRACT: The connections of Jan Potocki with theater have been discovered fairly recently. His career as a dramatic author has begun, in a way, in the 1950s’ after the discovery, in unusual circumstances, of the copy of The Collection of Parades Presented in the Theater in Łańcut in 1792. After being translated into Polish the Parades were published in “Dialog” in August 1958. A couple of months later Roger Caillos published them in a Paris periodical “People’s Theatre” (“Le théâtre populaire”) (1959, no. 34) in the original language. The first stage presentation in Polish of the Parades took place in November 1959 in Warsaw. In Autumn 1959 they were played, with a big success, in Paris in the Theéâtre des Nations. Thanks to this success the dramatic works of Potocki became known all over the world.

Polish Translations of The Manuscript Found in Saragossa. Variations on the Theme ABSTRACT: Comparative analysis of three versions of Polish translation of Jan Potocki’s The Manuscript Found in Saragossa carried out by Edward Chojecki: the original edition (1847), the one edited by Lorentowicz (1917), and Kukulski (1956). The analysis is preceded by a short description of the origin of this novel. According to Franc¸ois Rosset and Dominique Triaire there are three versions of the novel: from 1794, 1804, and 1810. The author discusses also the issue of translation of classic works advocating the intermediate form which does not include their excessive stylization. In the conclusion the author emphasizes that the repeated translation does not exclude or make obsolete former translations but coexists with them similarly to the way in which three editions of the novel coexist in France: a version edited by Roger Caillois (1958), Rene´ Radrizzani (1989), and two versions published in 1804 and 1810 edited by Rosset and Triaire.

Monarchy, Property, Civic Virtue. Patriotisms of Jan Potocki ABSTRACT: The article focuses on the reflections of Jan Potocki on the issue of Polish statehood. Brought up in the cosmopolitan spirit he got involved through his writing in the process of repairing the Republic of Poland attempted in the period of the Great Sejm. The third partition made him lose his faith in the cause. As a result he began to serve the tsar. One has to determine of the motives for this abrupt change of attitude lied in the cold calculation, historical determinism or in the strict connection between patriotism and the attachment to property?

Dialectalization, Foreign-Languages, and General Polish Language in the Melting Pot of the Language Appearance on the Example of the Recent Novels by Szczepan Twardoch
ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the multilingualism of Szczepan Twardoch’s recent novels from the perspective of the apparition of language. The natural field for the application of this research method, which is currently being tested, are the works characterized by dialectical distinctiveness or the use of foreign languages. In the case of Drach the use of wasserpolski (Silesian dialect) surpasses the boundaries of literary stylization and starts functioning on its own account in the default – that is Polish – logosphere of the novel. This Silesian-Polish parallelism is complemented by gradually more and more independent German. For both these counterparts for the Polish language – the wasserpolski and the German there are no extratextual interpretations. The author uses other strategies for the intratextual managing of multilingualism (periphrases, repetitions in free indirect style). The apparition of language signals its distinctiveness from the studies of literary style, which contributed a lot to the film and literary dialectology. The basic difference is that the apparitional method departs from identifying the stylistic basis or pattern.

Can the Contemporary Negative Language Phenomena Be Explained by the Pursuit of the Communication Community? ABSTRACT: The subject of the paper is to analyse the linguistic phenomena appearing after 1989 that often do not receive approval especially from middle-aged and elderly language users, for example: 1. addressative forms pani/ panie plus name in face to face contact; 2. vulgarisms used by the young people in face to face and on-line contact; 3. disclosure of privacy and intimacy in on-line contact. The aim of the paper is to attempt to answer the question whether the increasing incidence of these phenomena might be explained by the young generation’s pursuit of creating the communication community.
